Awakening

We are here to awaken from our illusion of separateness.
Thich Nhat Hanh

This week, we swam in our interdependence with everything around us in Detroit.

The Catholic church/school in our neighborhood:

A mural at a community garden dedicated to 100-year old legend Grace Lee Boggs:

Our neighborhood pizzeria owned by an Albanian couple, Meb & Sue. Yes, that's right: a large one-topping for $4.99. And it's tasty!

This joint, on Michigan Ave on the way to church, hasn't been open since we arrived a year ago. They've been doing a lot of work inside. We met Al, a guy installing security cameras, who told us the building caught fire twice last week. They suspect the owner of the nearby liquor store is behind the attempted arson.

This morning, Pastor Bill whipped out his chainsaw:

Ike showed off the spiderman doll he got for his 4-year-old daughter:

Ann showed up at the water hotline and delivered us some homemade lemon bars. In her words: "These lemon drops will make your sweet tooth go sit in a corner and put on a dunce cap."
